Take a few moments to relax, breathe, and prepare yourself for a calming, grounding, and luxurious skincare experience. By the time you're done, your skin will look and feel incredible.
The choice of the raw materials for this skincare ritual are inspired by the earth toned, herb spotted terraces at holistic health EcoHotel El Agua in Tenerife.
Before we start, allow me to introduce you to the concept of holistic skin care.
What is holistic skin care
Holistic skin care, a discipline within holistic health, is a comprehensive approach that focuses on treating the whole person - not just the skin - to achieve optimal skin health. It emphasises on the importance of overall health and well-being, and views skin health as intimately connected to the rest of the body which is why a holistic skin care approach stresses the importance of a healthy diet, stress management, and other lifestyle factors in maintaining healthy skin. Something the team at El Agua in Tenerife is specialised in with their vibrant food and individualised holistic therapy programs.
What we perceive as skin problems is a way of our body communicating with us and urging that something is off balance. A first step is always to strive to understand what aspects of your life threw you out of balance and readjust in those areas before heading for the beauty counter.
A holistic skin care approach has a greater and more profound impact on improving the appearance and health of your skin than any jar of cream ever could. At its core, holistic skin care is about recognizing the connection between skin health and overall health making it an invaluable part of your self-care.
In this skincare ritual we focus on the topical aspect of skin care. The main approach is to deeply respect the skin’s innate functions and never to harm or stress it. By skillfully using the simplest but powerful natural and organic single ingredients, most of which you can find in EcoHotel El Agua’s gardens or at your local health shop, I will show you how to adjust for your skin’s needs at any given time which allows us to go beyond the limiting concept of skin types.
We will also focus on the deep healing ability touch has for skin and create a sense of connectedness using only your hands to apply the natural ingredients and no tools.
This ritual works for any ‘type’ of skin as it supports the skin’s biology and allows it to work the way it's intended and educe natural glow and vibrancy. After all, skin is the body’s largest organ and is meant to work optimally just like any other of our organs.
1. Ground yourself, breathe deeply and make sure to be free of distractions the next thirty minutes. Set your intention to be loving, calm and caring towards yourself.
2. Using the almost magical oil cleansing method, apply a teaspoon of cold pressed, organic plant oil to your face and neck, massage in slow, circular movements. Close your eyes and really feel and enjoy your own, tender touch. Carefully clean your eyelashes, making sure no oil goes inside your eye. Cleanse your skin and eyes for one minute each. You can use Tenerife’s locally grown extra virgin olive oil or try cold pressed almond or avocado.
3. Gently take off your now dissolved eye makeup with damp cotton pads before reaching for a warm, damp washcloth and wipe off the oil from your face and neck. Again, be very gentle and intentional, do not press too forcefully. Go slow. Repeat if needed.
4. Optional double cleanse: In your palm, blend a clay of your liking with about double the amount of hydrosol or water into a creamy cleansing milk and wash your face with it. Rinse off with cold water and pat dry. Some skin loving clays are Illite (French green clay), Kaolin (white clay) or Ghassoul (Moroccan lava clay).
5. Your skin is now clean and ready to be replenished. Press in some aromatic rose or lavender hydrosol to hydrate your skin. Repeat as many times as you need until your skin’s thirst is quenching and feels supple and satisfied. If you don’t have a hydrosol at hand, make an infusion using aromatic herbs. Along the sun roasted paths of EcoHotel El Agua you can find rosemary, olive tree leaves, lavender, peppermint and other skin loving herbs.
6. Warm up a few drops of plant oil in your palms and press into your supple damp skin, face and neck. It may well be the same plant oils used for cleansing. For extra skin nutrition and antioxidants, add a few drops of pomegranate seed oil. Use this moment to give yourself an intuitive massage, releasing any tension.
7. Enjoy balanced, clean, supple, dewy, glowing, nourished skin!
Give your skin a couple of minutes to absorb all the goodness. How does it feel? Does your skin want more? If yes, then simply press in more of the hydrating and pH balancing hydrosol and follow up with a couple of drops of oil. You can layer this as many times as your skin craves it.
This technique gives you the opportunity to decide yourself how much hydration and replenishment you want to supply your skin with. In its essence, you are blending your own cream right on your skin but without the need of chemicals like emulsifiers, stabilisers or preservatives.
If you long for your next holiday to wipe away any built up stress and angst from everyday life, escape to the volcanic rolling hills of Tenerife and be welcomed by the dedicated team of highly skilled health chefs and wellness practitioners of EcoHotel El Agua. Reset for your body, mind and soul.
